2007 December 24- Christmas Eve: Moments

Luke 2:1-20. Using the song “Moments” by Emerson Drive as an overlay to the Christmas story, I talked about the anchoring moments of our lives and how they carry us through what may be the more challenging times. Merry Christmas…

2007 December 23- Ordinary Signs of Christmas

Isaiah 7:10-17. Yes, we broke with the Mark series in order to tie this Sunday message with the season of Christmas. How many times have I heard this passage read close to Christmas? A lot! Would it surprise you to know that the most original passage in Hebrew speaks of a “young woman” with child, not a “virgin” which was the later translation into Greek? Does that destroy the passage or does it add something to the possibilities of ways we hear it for our lives today? Take a listen and see what you think…

2007 December 9- Cut It Off?- for Christmas?!?

This weekend we looked at the passage from Mark 9:42-48 where Jesus says that anything that stands between us and God’s kingdom needs to be removed- his examples include cutting off a hand, foot, or eye if it causes alienation from God. And Merry Christmas to you too! How can this passage take us closer to the Christmas message? Take a listen and see. I used a clip from The Princess Bride where Westley, Inego, and Fesik are storming the castle to set an ominous tone from which to build the message. Sorry for the delay in posting- my internet was down and the morning version of the message wasn’t fully recorded…

2007 December 2- Insider/Outsider

Looking at Mark 9:38-41 this week, we talked about the lines we draw to put people in groups, insiders and outsiders. We used a clip from The Family Stone to illustrate what it can feel like to be an outsider in a close knit group… Once again, take a listen!
